A traditional sauna is a heated room typically constructed from wood, where temperatures range from 70°C to 100°C. The heat is generated by a stove that heats rocks, creating a dry heat environment. Water can be poured over the hot rocks to create steam and increase humidity levels.
Begin by showering to cleanse your skin. Enter the sauna and sit or lie down on a towel. Start with 10-15 minutes, then cool down with a shower or fresh air. You can repeat this cycle 2-3 times. Stay hydrated by drinking water before and after your session.
Regular sauna use promotes cardiovascular health, aids in muscle recovery, reduces stress, improves sleep quality, and supports detoxification through sweating. The heat exposure also strengthens the immune system and may improve skin health.
A dry sauna maintains low humidity (10-20%) with temperatures between 80-100°C, creating an intense dry heat. A wet sauna, or steam room, has high humidity (100%) with lower temperatures (40-50°C). Traditional Finnish saunas can be both, as water is poured on hot rocks to adjust humidity.
Traditional saunas heat the air around you using a stove and rocks, reaching higher temperatures. Infrared saunas use infrared lamps to directly heat your body at lower temperatures (50-60°C). Traditional saunas offer the authentic Finnish experience with the option to create steam, while infrared saunas provide a gentler heat that penetrates deeper into tissues.
